Did you just drop your kiddo off at college? This is for you! Please read and feel free to share.
If your kiddo is attending college at least 100 miles away from home WITHOUT their car, they qualify for a student away discount so contact your carrier or agent ASAP. This discount remains on the policy until either they are no longer a student or have their vehicle with them at school. They are still covered to drive so no need do anything else.
If your kiddo never had a car but is going away to school **do NOT remove them as a driver on your policy** Your auto coverage still protects them for other things like if they are injured as a pedestrian plus, should they get their own car and insurance down the road, the prior insurance discount can really help them.
If your kiddo is away at school and lives in an apartment or place that requires Renters coverage, this coverage can often be extended from the parents' home policy so contact your insurance carrier/agent first before taking out an unnecessary policy.
